Technologies such as computer tomography (CT) have significantly improved inherent diagnostic limitations such as expansion and distortion in conventional radiology.

CT allows for the reformatting of a volumetric dataset in axial, coronal, and sagittal cuts, and for the building of multiple cross-sectional and panoramic views.  Such pre-operative radiographic images can be uploaded into 3D planning software to expand the indications for oral implant based treatments.  It also enables the protection of critical anatomical structures and provides the esthetic and functional advantages of prosthodontics-driven implant positioning. 

Once implant treatment planning is determined the data can be sent to manufacturing facilities for a guide splint and construction of the prosthesis.  Some advantages of this technology are: reduced operating time,minimal surgical trauma and a reduction in postoperative sequela.
